Common Problems From Driving in NYC

What we see most on cars that drive Queens streets and the bridges, and how we fix it.

How a Repair Works at Our Shop

Diagnose first, quote second, repair only with your approval.

  1. Computer Code Scan

We read the fault codes and live sensor data to find what is actually wrong before recommending parts.

  2. Price Before Work

We explain what the car needs, what can wait, and what it costs. Under New York law you can ask for a written estimate, and no work starts without your OK.

  3. Repair and Pickup

Many common repairs can be finished the same day. We tell you the expected timing when we quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Auto Repair & Inspection Questions

Straight answers about NYS inspections, TLC vehicles, diagnostics, and pricing.

Can you do my TLC inspection?

No shop can. The NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission inspects taxis and for-hire vehicles at its own Safety and Emissions facility in Woodside, Queens. What we do is check and repair your vehicle before that appointment, so it passes the first time: brakes, tires, suspension, lights, and any check engine faults that would fail emissions.

  • Brake pad and rotor measurement against the minimums inspectors check
  • Suspension, steering, and tire tread checks
  • Check engine code scan and readiness monitor check before your appointment

Do you do NYS safety and emissions inspections?

Yes. We are a New York State DMV licensed inspection station (facility #7133964). Every vehicle needs a safety inspection every 12 months. Most cars and light trucks also get an OBD-II emissions check; vehicles less than two model years old, more than 25 model years old, and electric vehicles are exempt from it.

  • Safety: brakes, tires, steering, suspension, lights, windshield, wipers, horn, seat belts
  • Emissions: the OBD-II computer must show no active check engine light and enough completed readiness monitors

Why did my car fail inspection for "not ready" monitors?

After a battery disconnect or a cleared check engine code, the car’s computer resets its self-tests, called readiness monitors. For 2001 and newer vehicles, New York allows only one monitor to be not ready. The fix is usually a specific drive cycle, and sometimes a repair such as a small EVAP leak or a slow oxygen sensor that keeps a monitor from completing.

How do you diagnose a check engine light?

We connect a scan tool to the car’s computer, read the stored fault codes and live sensor data, and then test the suspected part before recommending a repair. A code points to a system, not always to a part, so we confirm before you pay for parts.

Will I know the price before you start?

Yes. We explain what the car needs and what it costs before any work begins, and no work starts without your permission. Under New York’s Motor Vehicle Repair Shop Registration Act you can ask for a written estimate, and the shop may not charge more than that estimate without your approval.

Will servicing my car here void my factory warranty?

No. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer cannot void your warranty just because maintenance or repairs were done at an independent shop. Keep your receipts; they document that required maintenance was done on time.
